Mother Tongue Languages
Discover how SCGS nurtures confident, lifelong learners of Mother Tongue Languages through rich cultural experiences and a tailored programme that goes beyond the classroom.

Philosophy
At SCGS, we believe that learning a Mother Tongue Language (MTL) is an integral part of each student’s bilingual journey. Beyond developing language proficiency, MTL learning enables our students to communicate confidently and meaningfully in everyday life, broaden their perspectives, and develop a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage. We aspire to nurture happy, confident and lifelong learners who find joy in learning their MTL and continue to appreciate its richness beyond the classroom.
Programme
Our MTL programme seeks to nurture confident and enthusiastic users of the language. We develop students’ listening, speaking, reading, writing and interaction skills through engaging, purposeful and differentiated learning experiences. Through a range of classroom activities and authentic opportunities to use the language, students are encouraged to express their ideas, communicate effectively and apply their language skills in meaningful contexts.
We recognise that our students have diverse learning needs and levels of language proficiency. Students with stronger language proficiency and an interest in deepening their learning are given opportunities to take Higher Mother Tongue Language (HMTL). Through HMTL, students are challenged to develop greater depth and sophistication in their use of the language, while broadening their cultural knowledge and perspectives.
We believe that language learning goes beyond the classroom. Through our Mother Tongue Fortnight, students across all levels are given opportunities to experience and appreciate the cultures and traditions of Singapore’s diverse communities through hands-on and experiential activities. These cultural experiences allow students to connect what they learn in the classroom with cultural traditions and practices, while developing a deeper appreciation for the richness and diversity of Singapore’s multicultural heritage.
Together, these experiences strive to support every learner in making meaningful progress, developing confidence in the language, and cultivating a lasting interest in their MTL.
