Philosophy:

At SCGS, English Language and Literature are valued as disciplines that equip students to navigate and contribute meaningfully to the world. Every Kim Gek develops into a confident thinker, compelling writer, and articulate speaker — qualities that define her well beyond her school years. Underpinning all that we do is a commitment to developing students as adaptive and socially responsible communicators, equipped with the critical thinking, communication skills, and civic awareness that characterise the 21st century learner.

Programme:

From lower secondary, students are immersed in a rich language environment. Through the Current Affairs programme and the integrated Language Arts Programme, they explore complex real-world issues, learn to form and defend their views, and develop a strong foundation in effective communication, critical thinking, and literary appreciation. SCGS is one of the only schools in Singapore where every student studies Literature — a distinction that reflects our deep belief in the power of narrative and the examined life.

Beyond the classroom, signature programmes bring language and literature to life. Students discover their own voice through spoken word and performance poetry, and experience literature beyond the classroom — engaging with the world around them in ways that are vivid, personal, and unexpected. These programmes cultivate in students a habit of observation, personal reflection, and creative courage.

Central to our Talent Development Programme, the SCGS Writers' and Orators' Circle provides close mentorship from teachers, alumni, and industry partners, giving students a vibrant platform to develop and showcase their talents. Our most passionate writers and orators are also supported through external programmes and competitions, where they have consistently distinguished themselves — reflecting the depth of talent and character that a SCGS education nurtures.
