Applied Learning Programme (ALP)
Discover how our Applied Learning Programme uses stories to build students' communication and collaboration skills, while inspiring them to serve their community.
Stories are powerful communication tools that create meaning and connect people, often embodying a way of life or heritage. Our Applied Learning Programme (ALP), Stories Opening Windows to the World, is designed to harness this power, opening up 'windows' for our students to connect with people and apply what they have learnt to make our community a better place to live in.
Like sowing a seed, the ALP aims to ignite in our students a passion to create, appreciate and serve the community around them. Through stories, students are given opportunities to explore, innovate, problem-solve and engage with the world. Using stories as the central theme and English Language as the medium, the ALP is a rich and progressive learning experience that develops students' communication, collaboration and information skills as key 21st Century Competencies:
Primary 1 and 2 students are introduced to the art of storytelling, experiencing stories as a means of communication and connection.
Primary 3 students build on this foundation by exploring perspective-taking through stories, learning to see and appreciate the world through different eyes.
Primary 4 students deepen their storytelling experiences by engaging in oral history, learning to understand and create stories that preserve and honour the narratives of our nation.
Primary 5 students take their learning to its fullest expression, leveraging stories to tackle authentic problems and effect meaningful change in the community.
Through telling stories in various creative forms, students grow in confidence as they engage with their audience, putting their communication, collaboration and information skills into practice in meaningful and real-world contexts. This is in line with our SCGS Desired Outcomes of Education, nurturing students to be Sincere Collaborators who communicate confidently and work well with people across social contexts, as well as Courageous Change Makers, Generous Contributors and Servant Leaders who are ready to serve and uplift the world around them.
